What do we know about venereal diseases?

There are more than 20 venereal diseases that may be transmitted through sexual contact. There is a worldwide sexually transmitted disease epidemic right now. Millions get a sexually transmitted disease (also known as an STD) each year, with most of the cases occurring among people between the ages of 15 and 24. If untreated, some STDs can lead to infertility. Some of the other sexually transmitted diseases may lead to even more serious medical problems.

Some people believe that they can tell if someone has an infection with one of these diseases. That is absolutely false. It is not true. Anyone can get a sexually transmitted disease, regardless of the number of sexual partners they may have. The risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease can be decreased by the proper use of latex or plastic condoms.

It is a good idea to pay attention to your own body, and watch for the signs of an STD. With all STD infections, both you and your partner need to be treated with the proper medical care. If not, the disease will spread and both of you could develop serious medical conditions.
